Our Journey

Spire’s origins trace back to BIM Networks, which was chosen as the ACH-based payment solution for the Merchant Customer Exchange (MCX) initiative. MCX, an early collaboration among major retailers, aimed to streamline mobile payments, reduce transaction costs, and enhance customer loyalty programs. While BIM was selected to support MCX’s payment strategy, it operated independently, providing a flexible and efficient solution that aligned with the needs of MCX’s retail partners.

Over time, Walmart, a founding MCX member, shifted to its own payment strategy, and MCX’s system – which required generating barcodes for payments – faded. But there was still a strong need for a low-cost, insight-rich payment solution. Starting with fuel retailers, merchants began embracing BIM’s pay-by-bank features for cost savings and loyalty boosts.

Fast forward to 2024, BIM became Spire, and the barcode-based payment mechanism used by MCX and BIM was transformed to use any payment instrument consumers want – physical card, phone or smartwatch – and for merchants to accept payments at any POS. Spire is revolutionizing the way people make everyday purchases, anywhere and everywhere payments are accepted. Spire is just getting started, with exciting innovations on the horizon.
